Why We Sometimes Decline Diminished Value Assignments

At times, consumers conduct their own research and may even present Diminished Value claims directly to insurance companies. Often, these claims are initially denied by the insurer before a professional appraisal is sought.

Part of our role is to discuss potential Diminished Value recovery with prospective clients. We are happy to provide an assessment based on repair estimates and market data, giving a fair and realistic expectation of the Diminished Value.

However, occasionally a prospective client comes to us with a set figure already in mind—perhaps influenced by online research or offers from companies like Carvana. The car owner may also have spoken with another appraiser who indicated an excessive diminished value figure. In these cases, we may decline the assignment. Our mission is to provide an unbiased, market-based assessment of a vehicle’s Diminished Value, not to support a pre-determined claim. Our company’s diminished value appraisals are grounded in fair research from real-world sources such as new car dealers. Whereas formulas, algorithms, online ad comparisons and book values can be manipulated by both insurers and independent appraisers, the opinions of six dealers are set in stone and averaged to produce fair diminished value numbers.

When a client’s diminished value expectations make an assignment difficult, it is often best to refer them to another professional who may better suit their ambitions.
