An adjuster is an individual or business entity who, on behalf of the insurer, for compensation as an independent contractor or as the employee of such an independent contractor, or for fee or commission, investigates and negotiates settlement of property/casualty claims arising under insurance contracts. In checking with the Illinois Insurance Department, an automobile appraiser who estimates damages or calculates the value of a car or other motor vehicle and reports to an insurance company need not be licensed as an Independent Adjuster.

Note: In many instances such as performing automobile valuation or diminished value appraisals for vehicle owners, there are no specific licensing requirements. It is advisable to hire an independent appraiser who is licensed in any state in order to assure a quality appraisal.
